In 1967 the Rover Company became part of Leyland Motor Corporation and in 1968 Leyland Motor Corporation itself merged with British Motor Holdings to form British Leyland. In the 1980s British Leyland was broken-up and in 1988 Rover Group, including Land Rover, was acquired by British Aerospace. In 1994 Rover Group was acquired by BMW. In 2000 Rover Group was broken-up by BMW and Land Rover was sold to Ford Motor Company, becoming part of its Premier Automotive Group.
Volvo Car Corporation, or Volvo Personvagnar AB, is a Swedish automobile manufacturer founded in 1927, in Gothenburg, Sweden. It is owned by Zhejiang Geely Holding Group. Volvo was originally formed as a subsidiary company to the ball bearing maker SKF. When Volvo AB was introduced on the Swedish stock exchange in 1935, SKF sold most of the shares in the company. Volvo Cars was owned by AB Volvo until 1999, when it was acquired by the Ford Motor Company as part of its Premier Automotive Group. Geely Holding Group then acquired Volvo from Ford in 2010.

Volvo produces models ranging from SUVs, station wagons (estates), and sedans (saloons), to compact executive sedans and coupes. With approximately 2,300 local dealers from around 100 national sales companies worldwide, the US is Volvo Cars’ largest market, followed by Sweden, Great Britain, China and Germany. In 2010, Volvo recorded global sales of 373,525 cars, an increase of 11.2% compared to 2009.

Volvo is often compared to and nicknamed tractors,] partially because Volvo AB was and still is a manufacturer of heavy equipment, earlier Bolinder-Munktell, now Volvo Construction Equipment. Some consumers considered older models to be slow and heavy, thus earning the distinction, “brick”,] as a term of endearment for the classic, block-shaped Volvo, with the more powerful turbocharged variants known as “turbobricks”. The company moved away from the boxy styles of the 1970s and 1980s, to models which gained a reputation for sporting performance, including the factory-supported Volvo 240 turbos, which won the 1985 European Touring Car Championship (ETC) and 1986 Australian Touring Car Championship (ATCC).

Volvo is known for its high safety standards. Owners are often proud of achieving high mileage. One well-documented 1966 Volvo P1800 has been driven over 2.8 million miles, a Guinness World Record for most miles driven by a single owner in a non-commercial vehicle. According to some figures, the average age of a Volvo being discarded is 19.8 years, second only to Mercedes.

You can depend on it

Jaguar is more than 80 years old now, and has long been celebrated for its magnificent sports and GT cars. You know the ones: the classic SS-100 of the Thirties, the lusty XKs of the Forties and Fifties, the sensuous E-Type of the Sixties, the lush XJ-S of the Seventies and Eighties. But sedans have loomed equally large in this British automaker’s fortunes, each a fast and stylish creation. Though the XJ6 of the Eighties represented only the sixth basic sedan design in Jaguar history, it was as much in the hallowed “Grace-Space-Pace” tradition as any of its predecessors.

The Jaguar story begins in 1921 at Blackpool, where young William Lyons teamed with William Walmsley in the Swallow Sidecar Company to design and produce specially shaped motorcycle sidecars. Six years later, SS branched out into the automobile business with a line of attractive open and closed sports bodies for popular high-volume chassis from makers like Austin, Morris, and Standard. The firm moved to Coventry in 1928, then changed its name to Swallow Coachbuilding Company, Ltd., in 1931, when it began turning out complete cars based on Standard running gear.

Its first offering, the SS I, was a close-coupled long-hood coupe powered by a 2.1-liter side-valve six in a specially fabricated underslung chassis that conferred a distinctive ground-hugging stance. This model and a smaller-displacement companion sold surprisingly well for a new British make in the Depression, prompting the firm to expand a great deal and, in 1934, to change its name again, this time to SS Cars, Ltd.

Lyons took another step forward in 1935 by hiring William Heynes, a

successful suspension engineer from the Rootes Group, to run the SS design department. He also recruited a talented engine designer, Harry Westlake. Lyons thought that the fruits of his firm’s labors deserved a special identity and, after considering a list of animal names, came up with the SS-Jaguar badge, which appeared that year on a handsome new sporting sedan.

From then until his retirement in 1972, Lyons would be personally involved with the design of every Jaguar. This explains the styling and engineering continuity from one Jaguar sedan to the next, something only a sensitive, single-minded individual can ensure. Thus, for example, the Mark V of 1948 was clearly descended from the prewar-design Mark IV, the original XJ6 of 1968 from the predecessor Mark X/420G.

We have all the required tools, equipment & experience to service any of the classic British Cars.

The Creator

The Mini’s creator, the late, great Sir Alec Issigonis, was a genius. The Mini was entirely his work and not the work of a whole team, as happens today.

He designed the Mini to be a small, cheap, economic wee car with safe handling…little did he know that the car would go on for 40 historic years.

He had a marvelous ability to visualize the completed car during its design stages. There are many examples of this, such as the one where an engineer asked him what size to make the wheels. Issigonis held his hands apart and said “this big”…the engineer measured the distance between his hands – 10 inches – and made the wheels exactly that size!
Casual sketches made by Issigonis could almost be used as blueprints by the engineers assembling the first prototypes.
He called himself “The Ironmonger” because he preferred to be hands-on rather than paper-based. “Market research is bunk” he said…”the public don’t know what they want, it is my job to tell them”. with more than 5.25 million Minis produced, who can argue?Sir Alec designed many other successful cars including the legendary Morris Minor and Austin 1100/1300 range.

Revolutionary Design

Born of necessity during the Suez Crisis, it had a revolutionary design for the time – with front wheel drive, the gears mounted in the engine’s sump and a transverse engine. The entire engine and transmission unit was contained on sub frames and fitted compactly under the Mini’s tiny bonnet. It was also VERY small – just over 10 feet long – which made it all the more incredible that it could take 4 people and (some) of their luggage. It has been available as saloon, station wagon, pick-up, van, cabriolet, utility vehicle (Moke) and numerous other permutations!
